Today's impeachment hearing has grown heated as GOP lawmakers tangle with witnesses
David Holmes, a State Department official detailed as a political counselor at the U.S. embassy in Kyiv, testified that former national security adviser John Bolton said during a meeting in August that the hold on military aid to Ukraine wouldn’t be lifted unless Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was able to “favorably impress” President Trump.
He held a copy of the report up to make his point during his opening statement, which preceded Hill’s. He also asked his staffers to give copies of the report to the witnesses, including Hill, “just so they can have a recollection of their memory.” “Over the following months, it became apparent that Mr. Giuliani was having a direct influence on the foreign policy agenda that the Three Amigos were executing on the ground in Ukraine,” Holmes said. At one point, Sondland stated, “Dammit Rudy. Every time Rudy gets involved he goes and f---s everything up,” Homes testified.
Although the call “was not on speakerphone,” Holmes said he “could hear the president’s voice through the earpiece” of Sondland’s phone. Deputy White House Counsel Michael M. Purpura sent a letter to Wolosky on Thursday reiterating that “whether or not the House authorized the ‘impeachment inquiry’ after Dr. Hill's October 14 deposition, Dr. Hill is still obligated to protect potentially privileged information acquired during the course of her service.”
Sondland testified on Wednesday that he “may have been spinning” when he told people that he been expressly directed by the president to deal with Ukraine policy, but he emphasized that he wasn’t part of an irregular foreign policy channel, citing his interactions with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and others.
