Illinois’ quest for its first national title in men’s golf ended Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to Florida State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA championship at Grayhawk in Scottsdale, Ariz.

After the Illini’s Tommy Kuhl and Adrien Dumont de Chassart won their matches and Matthis Besard and Piercen Hunt lost theirs, the quarterfinal came down to Jackson Buchanan’s match against the Seminoles’ Luke Clanton.who tied for second Monday in the individual competitionBoth players parred the ninth, giving Clanton a 1-up victory and ending the season for the third-seeded Illini, who were Big Ten champions for the 13th time in the last 14 years under coach Mike Small.

Sixth-seeded Florida State went on to lose 3-2 to No. 2 seed Florida in a semifinal later Tuesday, with the decisive match going 21 holes. Fifth-seeded Georgia Tech knocked off top seed North Carolina 3-2 in the other semifinal.Illinois advanced to match play for the eighth time since the current NCAA championship format was adopted in 2009, second to Oklahoma State . The Illini reached the title match in 2013 before losing to Alabama.

“We’re all very disappointed,” Dumont de Chassart said. “We all care so much and love each other, and it’s just always tough when it comes to an end earlier than expected. “But no regrets. We all played as hard as we could. It’s just that Florida State played better today. That’s a tough reality.”
