If There are Shallow Lakes Under the Ice on Europa, Clipper Will Find Them - by spacewriter

This illustration depicts a plume of water vapor that could potentially be emitted from the icy surface of Jupiter’s moon Europa. New research sheds light on what plumes, if they do exist, could reveal about lakes that may be inside the moon’s crust. Credits: NASA/ESA/K. Retherford/SWRI

A recent paper shows that shallow reservoirs located in relatively cold ice deform their “casings” slightly. As they freeze, pressure builds up on the ice walls surrounding the water. Deeper ones located in warmer ice deform more easily. For some of those under-ice lakes, that means they don’t get enough pressure buildup to send geysers out. They might, instead, send “warmer” icy slush as a form of “cryomagma.

Scientists on the Europa Clipper mission will be able to use this research to aim a radar instrument—called Radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding: Ocean to Near-surface —to search for lakes. The shallower the lake, the easier it might be for Clipper to find it.
