that “Black lives matter.” Coupled with that proclamation, we’ve seen bold statements about ending systemic racism and upending structural impediments to genuine equality in this country. Spurred by the on-camera killing of George Floyd on a Minneapolis street by police officer Derek Chauvin, this mounting support for Black Lives Matter appears poised to impact American society for years to come. But that can only happen if this new understanding of racism doesn’t displace the old one.
While organizing, mass protests, and advocacy efforts continue, we mustn’t forget the role individual actors play in bolstering systemic oppression. This is readily apparent in those less visceral viral incidents of whites calling 911 to report Black people engaged in innocuous, lawful activities, and the grassroots hashtag they spawned .
This weaponization of law enforcement to further white supremacy is not benign and threatens public safety and Black life. And with summer upon us, we are likely to see more incidents of this type, like the one in Wellington, Florida, on June 14, when a white resident of a gated communitywho was riding in a golf cart with a group of friends.
It helps explain why, in 1986, a white mob chased Michael Griffith to his death on a roadway in the Howard Beach section of Queens, New York, for the ephemeral crime of being in the wrong neighborhood. One of the men responsible for Griffith’s death admitted as much, in a
