Alaska State Troopers were notified by Iditarod officials that the musher “reportedly activated an SOS feature on a satellite communications device.”
An Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race musher has been rescued after being trapped in a ground storm outside of White Mountain, according to an Alaska State Troopers spokesman.Troopers on Friday at 1:45 p.m. were notified by Iditarod officials about the incident and that the musher “reportedly activated an SOS feature on a satellite communications device,” troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel wrote via email.
The search teams deployed by troopers were returning to White Mountain on Friday, according to McDaniel. Winds at White Mountain had been gusting at 30 to 35 miles per hour since Friday morning, said Kerrie Simmons, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks. A strong high-pressure system over Siberia and the western Bering Sea combined with a low-pressure system in northern parts of Gulf of Alaska are causing winds to funnel through valleys along the west coast of the state. While there are clear skies and no precipitation, the wind can pick up snow and bring down visibility, Simmons said.Morgan Krakow is a general assignment reporter for the Anchorage Daily News.
