“Obviously, focusing on the really pressing issues like the economy, strikes or small boats may mean some culture war issues get sidelined, but I think that’s a consequence of the need for focus not a driver of it.”
James Frayne, founding partner at strategic consultancy Public First, which advised Mr Johnson’s government, agreed that Mr Sunak was focusing on the issues that matter to voters. “Rishi Sunak is avoiding an idiot’s culture war – the sort of crass campaign which excites a tiny number of people on issues like identity, but leaves everyone else cold,” he said.
“The truth is, such campaigns go over most voters’ heads – who don’t follow cultural issues – and so prioritising them looks weird at best and unpleasant and rude at worst, which English voters hate. “The only cultural issues most voters really care about are those which appear to challenge their sense of patriotism or their positive view of British history.Former culture minister Ed Vaizey also agreed: “Certainly they want to reduce issues that expend political capital for little political gain.
