One of the few remaining old growth coastal redwoods in Marin County's Samuel P. Taylor State Park was destroyed by fire on Thursday, park officials said.

An iconic old growth coastal redwood, the Pioneer Tree, was destroyed by fire in Samuel P. Taylor State Park on March 24, 2022.The tree would have been about 600 years old when Samuel P. Taylor was born in 1827. Taylor was bitten by the Gold Rush bug and left New York for San Francisco in 1849. He went on to buy 100 acres in western Marin County from land grantee Rafael Garcia and opened the first paper mill on the West Coast.on Thursday. Fire fighters quickly got the blaze under control.

The tree had seen countless fires over the years and its interior was partially hollow and charred, but its root system was healthy and kept the old giant alive.California State Parks
