A small group of striking Hydro Ottawa workers picket in front of the utility company's headquarters on Hunt Club Road on July 7.Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 636 have voted to accept a contract offer from Hydro Ottawa, according to a union representative.
Mike Hall, a business representative with the union, said 57 per cent of members voted Monday evening to accept the offer.The IBEW Local 636 strike involving almost 400 Hydro Ottawa workers began on June 28, with major issues including wages, health benefits and workplace safety issues. In a virtual vote the night before, 74 per cent of the union members who participated voted to reject a four-year contract offer. Membership had voted down a previous contract offer, by 81 per cent, on May 31.
The collective agreement with IBEW Local 636, which represents trades and technical employees, plus inside workers, including customer-service representatives, expired March 31. Last week, about 150 striking Hydro Ottawa workers rallied outside city hall as their strike entered its 12th week. The rally took place after talks between the union and the city-owned power utility broke off on Aug. 23.— With files from Blair Crawford
