IATSE Local 161, which represents East Coast script supervisors, production coordinators and accountants, will begin bargaining with the AMPTP on Monday for a new film and TV contract. Pay equity i…

, the local’s president and chair of its contract negotiations committee. Mountain, a veteran production coordinator whose credits include, noted that 66% of the local’s 1,400 members in 23 states are women, and that the local’s production coordinators are paid “significantly less” than department heads in male-dominated crafts.

“For production coordinators, there is no-head-of-department rate. In New York, the scale rate for a production coordinator, who is definitely the head of a department, who runs an entire office, services the communications and logistics center of absolutely everything, is paid in New York less than a third of any other department head. And an assistant coordinator makes almost 50% less. So, we’re significantly behind other department heads.

“Our rates were set a very long time ago when we were considered secretaries and script girls,” Mountain said, “and unfortunately, pattern bargaining tends to keep you down for a very long time until you realize how far you are behind all of your union kin, especially the more male-dominated crafts.

Another key issue for the local, she said, is to gain contractual recognition for members who work as accountants. “Our accountants, though they’ve been members for 20 years, are not recognized by the AMPTP, and therefore do not have the same protections. They don’t get things like overtime and guaranteed turn-around so that they get proper rest at night.”
