The cruel lies of Ellie Williams saw well-known Barrow businessman Mohammed Ramzan accused of being the leader of a merciless gang of human traffickers
When Mohammed Ramzan looks out of his front window in Barrow-in-Furness, the first thing he sees is a giant purple elephant.
"It started as ice-cream wars", Rammy explains. "At the time I was changing my business model and I set up a dessert truck, doing novelty things from an ice cream van. I was on Just Eat; I had an app. You could order and the van would come out and make your dessert. It was booming and it was a year round business. I thought, 'this is brilliant! My son is sorted for life now. This can be his business'.
Knowing he had been speeding, Rammy pulled over and spoke to the officers, who were tailgating him in an unmarked police car. Expecting a fine and a stern ticking off, he was horrified to learn he was accused of modern slavery and human trafficking. As he stood by the side of the road, handcuffed, members of the public got out their phones and began filming as police searched his car.
Cumbria Police carried out a thorough investigation into claims made by Ellie Williams that she was the victim of a grooming gang. Meanwhile, another man, Jordan Trengrove, then 18, was remanded in custody after being falsely accused of rape by Williams. He spent 10 weeks on remand before being freed.
It was a perfect storm for the far right and on June 6, former English Defence Lead leader Tommy Robinson visited the town to take part in a 'Justice For Ellie' march. A year earlier he had pledged to give 100% of his income to victims of Asian grooming gangs, during his European election campaign in the town.
"I wouldn't let my older son go to parties in case people made false accusations about him. My kids couldn't go to nightclubs or hang around with English people... I couldn't work, and I became a conspiracist. I fitted CCTV around my home and I would sit awake at night watching the cameras to keep my family safe.
Rammy believes the root of the problem is racism. Having grown up in Lancashire in the 1980s he is no stranger to this kind of abuse. "At the time all this was happening we were trying to get planning permission for a Mosque in Barrow", he says. "The Muslim community is growing but the far right started sending hate messages and concocting lies.
