A Toronto police officer has pleaded guilty to professional misconduct for threatening to shoot a colleague in the head while on duty — an utterance called “egregious” misconduct by the prosecutor seeking his demotion.
Const. Kehui Li admitted at the Toronto police tribunal Tuesday that he got into a heated dispute with a colleague after they both attended a tense assault call last year. Moments after the conflict, when Li was alone with his partner, he made a comment in a “monotone voice,” according to an agreed statement of facts made public Tuesday.
The utterance was painted as a “momentary lapse in judgment” by defence counsel for Li, who himself rose and apologized for his actions and promised the tribunal it would never happen again. Li and that same officer soon got into a heated exchange about the handling of the call, with Li alleging the scene hadn’t been made secure for him; at one point, he’d been left alone in a residence with multiple angry parties.
