Nowhere will you get a better taste of the history and industry of Northampton than the newly reopened Lawrence's Coffee House. Not only does it offer some delicious local cakes and a very friendly feeling, the whole place is dripping with Northamptonshire heritage and culture.

Lawrence's bakery was opened by the Lawrence family in 1864, and served the people of Northampton for more than 100 years before being sold to Oliver Adams bakers in 1965. The bakery kept the Lawrence name and continued the cafe until the company went into liquidation in 2017. The eatery has a cosy warm feeling, with plush chesterfield couches and plenty of traditional tea-room decor. The cosiness is only emphasised by the wonderfully friendly staff there, who are more than happy to have a chat and a laugh with customers.

Made with ricotta instead of the traditional curds and whey, the cheesecake was easily one of the nicest things I've eaten in a long time. Salty-sweet crispy pastry encasing a rich and creamy filling with sultanas brought a huge smile to my face as I devoured the whole thing in about 30 seconds. James told me trade has been "non-stop" since they opened last week, they even ran out of bread for their last sandwich order on one day. Sure enough, as soon as the shop opened the door became a never-ending turnstile and within just ten minutes the whole place was full.
