On a day when they were supposed to start training camp with dreams of a third straight championship, Winnipeg Blue Bombers were on strike.
Players travelled to Winnipeg to begin camp but they have said they will not attend until a new collective bargaining agreement is hammered out between the league and the Players Association.“The only thing I will comment is that I stand with my teammates and that will never change as long as I’m a player,” said Bombers safety Brandon Alexander, one of many players in attendance for an informal workout at the team’s practice facility late Sunday morning.
Members of the Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders must still report for work and practice for at least three days before they will be in a legal strike position under Alberta labour laws. — “The first one is revenue sharing,” he said. “The league has rejected any of our requests around revenue sharing. This revenue sharing model has been built entirely through the CFL so far as a proposal and it lacks transparency. They have not approved our request for auditors to be able to validate revenue. They’ve talked about excluding certain types of revenue. Overall, the transparency hasn’t been there.
— “One thing we are not flexible on, with regard to term is the expiry of the CBA. The CBA has always expired the night before training camp, so you always have guys having to travel to camp and leave their families and there’s a lot of anxiety and stress. There are so many variables that affect our members in so many ways when all they want to do is prepare to play football for the season. The expiry date is not conducive to any of that.
A substantial group of players showed up at the Bombers’ practice field at the University of Manitoba late Sunday morning and held a walkthrough-style workout.
