What a day 😍
Most of us will have found themselves standing on a crowded train platform the freezing cold, anxious about the impending strum to get on when it pulls in. It's just not a pleasant experience.
Surrounded by excited chatter of hundreds of schoolchildren in hi-vis vests, friends with camera phones taking selfies and the smell of locomotive engine steam replacing the chill, I was about to board the world-famous Flying Scotsman. Growing up, my dad had always been more into planes that trains, taking me to air shows, but due to his career in and passion for engineering, it was easy to appreciate it, too.View gallery And the Flying Scotsman is a magnificent piece of engineering.
I also spent time talking to the crew, who are all volunteers, before we set off, and their enthusiasm and dedication was so infectious, I almost signed up to be a conductor on the spot. Of all of the ladies I spoke to, something ELR general manger Tracey Parkinson said struck the hardest. That dispelled any of those archaic myths and stereotypes that this is just a man's game faster than you can say all aboard.
