On the anniversary of a generation-defining battle, a teenager searches for leaders to guide her through the nation’s many crises and comes up empty

I expected the rope to burn, but the wind surprised me. As I tried to raise the American flag over the white marble crosses of the Normandy American Cemetery in France, a gust of wind blew off the English Channel, over the cliffs.

I was born in Manhattan months after 9/11. In some ways, I absorbed the anguish of the attacks even before I was born as my mother breathed in the lingering dust of the toppled towers on long walks downtown. In preschool, after we moved to Washington, D.C., I overheard parents at pickup, making play dates while debating code-orange escapes and duct tape, stocking windowless rooms with canned corn.

I’m struggling to understand if we are acting on American values, or if we’re simply ad-libbing, as we reel from one concussive head punch to another.
