The island only emerges a few times a year, during king tides.
As the sky darkened, the crowd circled around the growing fire. Generous partygoers retrieved snacks and beverages from coolers, sharing their goodies in the holiday spirit, and I was soon double-fisting eggnog and hot apple cider spiked with whiskey while kids roasted s’mores over the flames. A chicken wearing a life vest appeared from somewhere, clucking and strutting between lawn chairs. A happy dog splashed in the gentle inky waves.
About two dozen people enjoyed a brief party on “the disappearing island” of the Ashby Shoal on Dec. 22, 2022. After another hot cider or two, less than three hours since Zeph and I had arrived, it became clear the island was shrinking. After the wake from a passing boat nearly doused the bonfire, we decided to head home. I started packing up at a leisurely pace, but as I paused to admire the view one last time, a lick of water splashed at my ankles. I realized that the bay was closing in on us fast, from all sides. We hopped into the kayak and paddled away just in time.
