Mireles, who had been an educator for 17 years, tried to protect her students from the gunman, a relative told The New York Times.Eva Mireles' aunt told The New York Times that Mireles was a teacher who “took pride in teaching mostly students of Latino heritage.” Cristian Garcia said his mother — Irma Garcia, another teacher at Robb Elementary school — was also confirmed dead in the shooting. Cristian told NBC News a friend in law enforcement who was at the scene saw Garcia shielding her students.
"We're a small community, and we will need your prayers to get us through this,” Hal Harrell, the Uvalde CISD superintendent, said following Tuesday's mass shooting. Cruz drove to the scene after receiving a tearful and terrifying call from his daughter shortly after the first reports of an 18-year-old gunman had opened fire at the school. While he waited outside the school Tuesday night, his family was at the hospital and civic center waiting for any potential word on her condition.“I hope she is alive,” Cruz said. “They are waiting for an update.”
