Community activist Evelyn Rivera, 57, is among the Hispanic leaders being profiled as part of the Plain Dealer and cleveland.com’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. She is one of the few bilingual clinical psychologists in Ohio. Cleveland.com readers nominated more than 50 Hispanic leaders who are influential across northern Ohio in business, art, music, politics, advocacy, activism, education and other areas.

Involvement in the community: “There are two statewide groups I am involved with — LatinOHs and Ohio Latin Civic Engagement,” Rivera said.to advocate on behalf of Latinos politically and disseminate information on political issues affecting Latinos. Ohio Latin Civic Engagement is the more nonpartisan group that does education unity around political issues. I helped start both of them. I am a co-founder of LatinOHs, and co-team leader for OLCE.

“I want to educate the community on policy, so when they vote, they’re voting based on knowledge of the candidates, viewpoints and policies,” Rivera said. “The key is to get Latinos voting because they have traditionally been marginalized. There are many barriers people who actually care about us?
