At times, the stammer felt debilitating, dehumanising and only played into a severe lack of self confidence. I often felt exhausted by having to talk, and I would talk less in the evenings , to avoid further frustrations. Of course during this period, many people dealt with far worse than a change in speech. But it was so stark – a loss of my ability to speak freely – and undeniably seeped into my daily life.

The actual stammer wasn’t the only issue at play though, as remembering some words also became a real issue. Known as “word finding”, the names of everyday objects seemingly vanished from my mind. Even now the word “thingy” has become one of the most used words in my lexicon, and I often revert to adamantly pointing at the object, or wielding off long descriptions for someone to guess the word, like a bizarre encounter of forced charades.

I didn’t act on what was happening, mainly as it didn’t really feel it was bad enough. I couldn’t take up precious NHS time with something like this, it felt menial in comparison to the larger picture at the time. Now, as we approach three years since the start of the pandemic, my stammer is not as obvious as it once was, nor is it happening as frequently, but the remains are still there.

The effects of the stammer are still there; I’m having to use vocabulary apps on my phone as daily reminders of the wonderful words that are in my brain in the hope they’ll resurface soon. Although the pandemic now feels mostly like
