If you’re my friend, my therapist, or just someone who has been in my general ranting vicinity when my desire to not be single reared its lonely head, you’ve definitely heard me sing this refrain: I wish I could just skip to the good part, that sweet mark a few months in when it’s still new but comfortable enough that I can delete Tinder, Bumble, Lex, Her, Hinge, and every other app I’ve ever optimistically downloaded onto my phone.
By admitting all this, I realize I’m going against one of the biggest unspoken rules of modern dating in the first place: I’m being aggressively unchill. Eager, even. It feels like a gross misstep in athat, in my experience, at least, values playing it cool, staying casual, and protecting your heart by being careful about how much you share, how soon.
Arguably, it was also okay to be upfront and not-chill before the pandemic, but for a lot of us, it sure as hell didn’t feel like it. I know there will be people who are like, “Pfft, who are these losers who need the safety of a screen to fall in love?” If you’re asking that, this article isn’t for you, and that’s okay. Maybe pandemic dating isn’t for you, either. But it could be for a lot of people.
It could be a safe space to date while worrying less about being stuck somewhere with a total asshole. Suddenly we canIt could be romantic as hell for anyone who’s secretly always wanted to live out the plot of a rom-com or their favorite fanfic. TheIt could be a mulligan for anyone whose past trauma or baggage or defense mechanisms have made them feel inept at “typical” dating.
