Anastasiia Vlasova spent her 13th birthday hunkered in a basement while Russians bombed her city. Now safe in St. John's with her mother, celebrating her 14th in a couple of days will be somewhat bittersweet.
“Great fear, horror, memories of a year ago cover me,” another Ukrainian refugee, Anastasiia Martynenko, tells SaltWire.“I am waiting with fear for February 24 — this is the most terrible date in my life, but my family is safe here.”
Since the start of the Russian invasion, 2,072 Ukrainians have sought refuge in Newfoundland and Labrador. Maryna Sikorska came to St. John's, NL on one of the provincial government charters in June last year. - Contributed “I feel like I'm in a parallel universe. We are now in a wonderful, very beautiful province, where everything is calm and we receive simply enormous support and help from people. But in a parallel world, a war is going on in my country, people are dying, children are orphaned, all hopes are destroyed.”
