If passed, House Bill 813 would give the child advocate access to records and documents, give them the ability to show up to facilities for announced and unannounced visits, allow them to set up a staff, and allow them to receive complaints from the public, among other duties. "It's very important to me, and obviously to a lot of advocates, and to these youth who desperately need an advocate to make this a permanent office to oversee children in the system," said Rep. Sappey.However, over the last two decades, similar legislation has yet to pass.
HB 813 was referred to the House Children and Youth Committee back in April. So far it has not gone up for a vote, and it is unclear if it will.
