Elizabeth Kolbert on Hurricane Otis, a Category 5 storm that landed near Acapulco, Mexico, and a harbinger of more extreme-weather events caused by climate change.
What made Otis so dangerous was not just the fact of its strength but the surprise of it. As recently as Monday evening, it was classified as a tropical storm, and forecasts had it strengthening only slightly before hitting the coast. It wasn’t until after midnight on Tuesday that the first hurricane warning for the region was issued; at that point, Otis was expected to make landfall as a Category 1 storm. Then Otis really got busy.
” A paper published by an international team of scientists the day before Otis hit put it this way: “Life on planet Earth is under siege. We are now in uncharted territory.” For decades, the scientists noted, researchers have warned that the buildup of CO2 in the atmosphere would produce a future filled with extreme events. Now, that future is here.
