Hurricane Orlene rapidly strengthened as it swirls toward Mexico's northwest Pacific coast, with a likely close brush with former prison islands being developed by the government as an ecotourism destination.

Orlene grew to hurricane strength Saturday and is heading for an expected landfall early next week on Mexico's northwestern Pacific coast. Hurricane Orlene rapidly strengthened as it swirls toward Mexico's northwest Pacific coast, with a likely close brush with former prison islands being developed by the government as an ecotourism destination.
The center said the storm would likely strengthen more Sunday, then begin weakening as its moved closer to land. Orlene might bring heavy rains and high winds to the Pacific coast resort of Puerto Vallarta as it passes offshore Sunday, forecasters said. Puerto Vallarta closed its port to ship and boat traffic Saturday as a precaution.
