Hurricane Helene has intensified into a Category 1 storm and is predicted to become a major hurricane before making landfall in Florida Thursday night. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, flooding, and the potential for tornadoes across a large swathe of the southeastern US.
Helene has now reached category 1 hurricane status and continues to gain strength northeast of Cozumel, Mexico. A major hurricane is expected Thursday with likely landfall in Florida Thursday night.
Hurricane watches and warnings along with tropical storm watches and warnings have been posted for most of Florida and parts of Georgia. A tornado threat will increase across southeast Georgia and northeast Florida on Thursday, several tornadoes are possible due to the strong wind shear near the surface.Helene is expected to take a similar path as major hurricane Idalia in 2023, which resulted in $3.5 billion in damage and 12 fatalities.
