House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and all 25 Jewish Democratic members of Congress on Monday issued a statement condemning reported comments by an Amnesty International official as antisemitic.
Amnesty International USA Executive Director Paul O’Brien recently told a Woman’s National Democratic Club meeting that Israel “shouldn’t exist as a Jewish state,” according to Jewish Insider.The same group recently issued a controversial report accusing Israel of “apartheid” toward Palestinians, a claim rejected by the State Department.
In a joint statement, the lawmakers said,"On the heels of a recent Amnesty International report that a number of Members condemned as delegitimizing of the Jewish people’s right to self-determination and undermining of the prospects for a two-state solution, Amnesty International USA’s Executive Director Paul O’Brien has now taken a new, very disturbing step: purporting to speak for the entire Jewish community on Israel.
“He claimed his ‘gut’ tells him ‘what Jewish people in this country want’ is that Israel ‘shouldn’t exist as a Jewish state,’” the statement said."As Jewish Members of the House of Representatives, we represent diverse views on a number of issues relating to Israel. However, we are in full agreement that Mr. O’Brien’s patronizing attempt to speak on behalf of the American Jewish community is alarming and deeply offensive.
In a tweet, Hoyer expressed support for the statement, writing that he is “proud to stand with Jewish Democratic Members of Congress as they speak out against the antisemitic statement by the Executive Director of Amnesty International USA that denies the Jewish people’s right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland of Israel.”
