Remote work presents a “double\u002Dedged sword” for many Canadian women.
So, what would she do if she were asked to go back in full time?Simms isn’t alone. Nearly half of Canadian women say they would rather quit their jobs than return to the office full time, according to The Prosperity Project’sThere are many reasons why women in the workforce want to preserve their remote work options, including flexible hours, reduced commutes and a greater ability to balance work and family commitments, suggests Carmina Ravanera.
“Because of gender norms, it’s still generally women who take on most domestic and caregiving work at home,” she says. “Flexible work can help women stay in the workforce and work effectively while also being able to do care work and do domestic work. That can have a big economic advantage because it means that they don’t necessarily have to work part time. Or they can just stay in the workforce fully and still stay in those paid jobs that they want.
“There are presumptions about what makes an ideal worker. The general idea is still perpetuated that it’s someone who can be in the office nine to five or longer. It’s someone who is always able to be on call and is really dedicated to their work,” Ravanera explains. For remote workers themselves, the challenge of separating unpaid work from paid work persists. This can lead to work-family conflict, employees working longer and irregular hours, stress and other mental health challenges. “That line between your personal life, your family life and your job tends to get more blurred because you’re working from home,” Ravanera says.I just remember feeling that like, I wasn’t good at anything.
