CPS Energy’s color-coded conservation levels let San Antonians know what they should be doing to help the state’s power grid keep up with summer demand.
CPS Energy’s conservation guidance, shown in this screen capture taken from the utility’s website, has four color-coded levels. The levels are tied to the expected demand for energy. Green is the level for most days and calls for everyday conservation actions. Yellow days come into play when consumers need to take extra steps to help CPS meet peak energy demand. The orange and red alert levels are used when ERCOT warns that “grid reliability is at risk.
You read that right — 78 degrees. Too warm for you? Fans are the answer — not turning down the thermostat, CPS says. It points out that using fans can make a room feel 4-6 degrees cooler . Ceiling fans should be set to turn counterclockwise in the summer, clockwise in the winter.CPS also recommends closing shades and blinds to help keep cool.
CPS’ “everyday conservation” measures includes setting your thermostat at 78 degrees in the summer and 68 degrees in the winter. On yellow days, CPS will announce on its home page and social media accounts the time periods when you should adjust your thermostat even higher . You also should avoid using your large appliances — washer & dryer, oven and dishwasher — during that time of peak energy demand.
And for those of you trying to help the planet by driving an electric vehicle — CPS says wait until after 10 p.m. to charge it.An orange alert means there’s an “energy grid reliability risk” — in other words, you need to prepare for losing power.
