Here's how the Census Bureau worked with Amazon, Adobe, Facebook, and Google for the 2020 digital census:
“I would say that government IT projects ... usually don’t get accolades for being successful,” Stephen Buckner, Assistant Director of Communications for the U.S. Census Bureau,. “Going into the 2020 census there was a lot of discussion over whether the Census Bureau was ready, and whether or not it could really keep up with the demand for the number of people going to the internet.”
To date about 60% of the American public has filled out the survey. So since the 2020 census ends, appropriately enough, on October 31st, the Census Bureau still has almost half a year to beat last year’s participation rate.“We recognized when we started the project ... we were on on-prem infrastructure, we realized we were not at where we needed to be to scale to meet 2020 census demands,” Zachary Schwartz, a Division Chief at the U.S. Census Bureau, told me.
Because the census is used by all governmental agencies for decision-making, the Census Bureau also took special care to safeguard both the process and the product — the census data — from any domestic or foreign bad actors.
