The Exorcist: Believer director David Gordon Green reveals how he convinced Ellen Burstyn to return as Chris MacNeil 50 years after the original.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Exorcist: Believer director David Gordon Green reveals how he convinced Ellen Burstyn to return after 50 years. From Green, the director of the recent Halloween trilogy, The Exorcist: Believer acts as a direct sequel to the late director William Friedkin's original horror classic from 1973.

In a new interview with Total Film after The Exorcist: Believer trailer revealed her return, Green opened up about how he convinced Burstyn to come back as Chris MacNeil for the new chapter. The director says he was inspired by Burstyn's autobiography, Lessons in Becoming Myself, which allowed him to get to know the actress better, and together, they carved out a meaningful role for her in the film.

It’s incredible. I read her biography, and then it became like a mission: could I invite one of the Hollywood icons to step into this role that she hasn’t been in, in 50 years? That’s a true undertaking. The inspiration that her book gave to me in terms of her perspective after the movie, and how the success of the movie... I say "success," but also a lot of obstacles and hardships were faced because of the notoriety of the film.

Chris MacNeil's Importance In The Exorcist: Believer Explained Before Burstyn, Green had prior experience persuading actresses to reprise their iconic horror roles. The director previously convinced Jamie Lee Curtis to return as Laurie Strode for his recent Halloween trilogy, though she had previously reprised the role for Halloween II, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, and Halloween: Resurrection.
