A multigenerational family's experience on deciding to reunite and shelter in place during the coronavirus pandemic.
Two weeks ago, before our first dinner together in Michigan as a newly reconstituted multigenerational family of six living under the same roof, my 24-year-old daughter, Florence, set some “sheltering in place” rules. “Every evening, we are going to meditate and then share our ’intentions,’” she proclaimed, explaining that at her Washington, D.C. nonprofit they use both of these “tools” to decrease tension in the workplace.
It was our first communal meal as a family since Christmas, when we were still adjusting to life together without my 88-year old father, Bill, the emotional linchpin of our brood, who died in late October. But there were still plenty of characters around the table. Within days of the kids’ arrival, the challenges of this new group-living experiment became abundantly clear. We each have our own bedrooms, but the internet works best on the main floor of the house. So from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. we all gravitate there with our laptops in search of a signal, often interrupting each other’s work calls for a quick chat, unaware someone is listening to their supervisor, not Spotify.
We now have a system in place of dividing up household chores, with my role being the never-ending task of keeping the fridge full: the added difficulty being we can’t go to the grocery store more than once a week. No one is allowed to open a can of soup or bag of corn chips without my approval as I check off daily the contents of our pantry and freezer.
