A reoccurring theme in Chicago Cubs camp centers on three words: Don’t push it.

MESA, ARIZ. —

The Cubs have preached this since players reported post-lockout, and the philosophy is especially pertinent to pitchers ahead of a long season. A shortened camp and fewer Cactus League games than usual means pitchers’ workloads might not be fully built up. The addition of two roster spots for April is a big boost and will affect how the Cubs plan to set up the pitching staff heading into opening day.

“We want to make sure we’re taking care of everybody and keep those options healthy throughout the season.” The Cubs have a few avenues they can take to building the staff, but ideally it will feature plenty of options who can go multiple innings. Pitching coach Tommy Hottovy previously mentioned the possibility using a piggyback approach for starters as pitchers continue to ramp up.

With 11 more Cactus League games before the Cubs break camp, a lot can change. This is particularly true for how they set up the rotation. Who they use as a starter at the onset versus out of the bullpen in a piggyback alignment will depend partly on which pitchers are best positioned to give them bulk innings.RHP Kyle Hendricks
