The BBC is facing its biggest crisis in recent history – but why is the current dispute with Gary Lineker over his personal views of the Government’s immigration policy is so important? DavidParsley50 reports:
The BBC is facing its biggest crisis since it was found that Martin Bashir used forgery and deception to secure his 1995 Panorama interview with Diana, Princess of Wales.
His comments led to accusations from a raft of Conservative MPs that he was breaching the BBC’s impartiality guidelines.Former BBC director general Mark Thompson tells Laura Kuenssberg that Gary Lineker committed a ‘technical breach’ of BBC guidelines “We expect these individuals to avoid taking sides on party political issues or political controversies and to take care when addressing public policy matters.”
In the Friday episode of Wrighty’s House, he said: “I’ll tell you something. If they do – the BBC get rid of Gary Lineker – I’m out, I’m gone. I’m not staying there. On his own platform he should be able to say what he wants to say.
He wrote: “This is anti-British drivel of a high order. Was any of the licence fee used to produce something purely designed to demean us?”Are there any other political controversies within the BBC? Mr Sharp’s appointment is being investigated over his relationship with Mr Johnson. He denies wrongdoing.
