One North Texas school district has already received more than 600 reports this year.

Here’s why officials turn to such programs and what experts say is needed for them to be effective.Identifying threats, such as possible school shootings, before they happen is the primary goal.

“We train our kids every year on what signs to look for in peers that might be depressed or having some problems they might need help from an adult with,” Caldwell said. Within districts, administrators say they often have quicker access to reports submitted through other alternatives to iWatchTexas. Ultimately, they decide who should look into the report, which means working with local law enforcement when necessary or having school staff respond.

School officials agree. That’s why some districts have their own high schoolers promote the tools. Frisco, for example, produced video testimonials by teenagers about why it’s important to report concerning behavior through the STOPit app. “That’s really helped with the investigations to be able to talk back,” Caldwell said. “There’s a lot of research that shows that kids are more likely to report to an adult that they need help if they have a relationship with them.”
