The snow might have been cold, but the sun was hot at the Donner Summit area of California.A scraggly-looking cottonwood stands on the side of Highway 89, near the Truckee River, about halfway between Alpine Meadows and Tahoe City. It’s been called the snow tree. Local legend says that when this cottonwood loses its leaves, snow will come.

This sort of tick-tock between extremes is often called"weather whiplash," and scientists are trying to better understand the implications and how these events will impact the ways we adapt to climate change.2019 research paper Weather whiplash is a phenomenon that can happen in all seasons, whenever temperatures and precipitation conditions are misaligned with what’s expected of the season.

The Sierra Nevada is a land where the pendulum of weather swinging between extremes is somewhat familiar ground. Vintage photos show skiers in their bikinis sunbathing in the snow, and the tradition continues. In Tahoe, I’ve seen snowstorms in August. And I’ve worn flip-flops in March. But climate experts say that global warming is making the extremes more extreme and the impacts more severe.
