Stephen Lang explains how Quaritch is back as a Na'vi in AvatarTheWayOfWater: 'He’s a genetically-engineered autonomous avatar. He has been downloaded with the mind, the emotions, and even more interestingly, possibly the spirit of Quaritch.'
Avatar: The Way of Water star Stephen Lang explains how his villain character Quaritch is brought back from the dead for the long-awaited sequel. Lang’s Quaritch certainly made a memorable bad guy when he first appeared in James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar. A member of the militaristic RDA, Quaritch helped menace the peace-loving Na’vi of the moon Pandora, until meeting a fitting end when Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri shot him through the heart with one of her giant arrows.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY And that seemingly was the last audiences would ever see of Quaritch. But surprisingly, when casting for Avatar 2 was being revealed, Lang’s name was indeed on the roster. And later it was confirmed that Lang would be returning as the dead Quartich. Fans were left to wonder how Lang’s vanquished RDA bad guy could possibly be back after taking an arrow through the heart in the original Avatar.
He’s a genetically-engineered autonomous avatar. He has been downloaded with the mind, the emotions, and even more interestingly, possibly the spirit of Quaritch. Now, that's all pretty esoteric stuff. He comes with a full memory bank up until the time he actually undergoes the DNA transfer. So there are certain things that he doesn't have any memory of at all. He has no memory of his death.
But why bring back the Recoms as Na’vi instead of as humans? The presumed rationale behind this is that it makes them better-adapted to the environment on Pandora, and therefore much more effective in combat . And creating Recoms using the minds of soldiers who died fighting the Na’vi also has its advantage, as it preserves whatever experience and knowledge was gained by the person in question before they died. In the case of Quaritch, it likely also preserves his intense hatred for the Na’vi .
All this of course begs the question whether Quartich and his fellow Recoms can ever really be killed off. One presumes that if a Recom is killed, another one can simply be made using the same memories and DNA. Of course, there could be a certain amount of source degradation over time, limiting the number of viable Recoms that could be made from a given individual.
