Volcanic eruption caused a blast that could be seen from space and created tsunami waves captured on video.
The size and scale of the undersea volcanic eruption in Tonga drew the attention of social media early Saturday morning. Above the earth, satellites caught the explosion and the massive shockwave it sent. On the ground, unconfirmed videos reportedly showed the aftermath as massive waves flooded coastal areas.
According to the Associated Press, “there were no immediate repots of injuries or on the extent of damage because all internet connectivity with Tonga was lost” in the late afternoon. Meanwhile, reports from the Pacific Tsuanmi Warning Center recorded waves that measured half a meter in Nawiliwili, Kauai and 80 centimeters in Hanalei. Closer to home in the Bay Area, evacuation orders were given at the Berkeley Marina and Bay Area residents were told to avoid the coasts.
