For ethical reasons, participants are typically debriefed afterward about what the experiment was about afterward.In this study, 250 participants, 111 women, at the average age of 21 years old, completed two initial measures, the Action Control Scale , which probes self-regulation, and the Self-Access Form , which is about how well a person can get at “emotional self-referential information,” i.e., look under one’s hood.
The experimental procedures then followed a series of steps. First, participants rated 96 annoying office tasks according to how much fun it would be to do them. Then, they played a computer game known to increase negative moods. Next, each participant was given a list of tasks they’d rated before as being equally fun and asked to pick two of them.
Participants were then given a surprise memory test ostensibly about coping with the workload but which was designed to get at self-infiltration by looking at errors in how people remembered the source of the task for different task types .
They found that lack of emotional awareness was the critical factor connecting self-regulatory problems with self-infiltration. In other words, when we are unaware of our inner feeling states, all other factors equal, we are vulnerable to introjection and more likely to confuse others’ motives as being our own. The tendency toward self-infiltration is undergirded by low self-integration.
Self-infiltration is a hallmark of problematic relationships, making it easier to be exploited by unsavory characters or to fall into negative patterns with well-intentioned partners.
