Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has fully backed Russian President Vladimir Putin since the Ukraine war began, but Belarus hasn't always acted as a 'vassal state' to Russia.

Anthony Tata joined "Fox & Friends Weekend" to discuss his take on the Wagner Group's retreat and the key players involved in the group.of Ukraine in February 2022, Belarus has stood out as one of Moscow’s few allies and the only European nation to offer Russia direct support in its war effort, including in its most recent endeavor to end a mutiny against the Kremlin.
Belarus declared its independence from the Soviet Union in August 1991, and by early December of that year, leaders from Belarus, Ukraine and Russia met to sign the Belovezha Accords. The agreement solidified the– a collapse that Putin would one day call the "greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century."

Rough explained that Putin’s willingness to jump in and help Lukashenko was down to more than maintaining region stability; it has enabled him to keep Lukashenko beholden to Russia.
