That could leave Ferguson and Hendershot as the Cowboys’ top tight ends Monday. Up from the practice squad, Sean McKeon is also expected to be in uniform.Ferguson, a 2021 first-team all-Big Ten selection at Wisconsin, and Hendershot, a standout and team captain at Indiana, were distantly familiar before meeting at the combine. It is natural to monitor other top players within the same conference.
“I turned around and walked towards the group, as I was about to jump my third jump,” Ferguson said. “I was like, ‘Turn me up!’ and I’m pretty sure I pushed him a little bit.” “Right before he got drafted, my brother was like, ‘What are you going to do if they draft Ferg instead of you?’” Hendershot said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to be mad as hell.’ And then they draft Ferg, and then we both ended up being here. It’s crazy how it turns out. It was really like a blessing in disguise. … Jake has helped me out a lot, and I love having him here with me.”
By that point, Ferguson and Hendershot knew each other well enough to notice when one of them was inside his own head.“I was thinking too much,” Hendershot said. “He told me on the sideline, ‘Bring the villain out. Just be the villain.’ He tried to get me right. A couple plays later, that’s when my helmet [padding and chin strap] popped off, and I took his helmet and scored. He’s really a big supporter for me. He tries to help me out.
