HoopsHype ranks Ayton fifth on its top 25 centers list for the 2022-23 NBA season behind Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Bam Adebayo and Rudy Gobert.
Gobert shot a higher percentage from the field than Ayton and Adebayo last season at an insane career-best 71.2% to lead the NBA while Ayton has expanded his game from 3 more than Gobert and Adebayo.
Gobert is clearly considered the best defender of the bunch as he’s won the league’s defensive player of the year honors three times. He averaged 2.1 blocks last season.Adebayo, despite being reluctant to take 3s, has the most complete offensive skill set when taking his ball-handling ability and passing into account. He’s averaged at least five assists in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons before dipping to 3.4 per game last season.
Adebayo launched 6.1 free throws a game last season. He knows how to use that physical frame to draw fouls.Ayton has to figure that out, but has to convert at a high percentage too. Defensively, Ayton makes highlight blocks that go out of bounds, but tallying more with the majority staying in play to lead to transition opportunities would in a strange way stand out even more.
