If not for a gift from Thomas Cutinella, Karen Crowell wouldn't be alive today to be a mother to her daughter, Colette. FOX 5 NY takes a look at how one organ donation has forever linked two families.
29-year-old Karen Crowell is alive today thanks to a 16-year-old Long Island athlete's decision to become an organ donor. "She’s here now perfectly healthy and happy," Crowell, a new mother, said. "I feel like I still can’t find a way to say thank you."
Karen was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy when she was just 11 years old. But just before her college graduation Karen learned she’d need a heart transplant to survive. Two days before that date, 16-year-old Thomas Cutinella tragically died after suffering a traumatic head injury during a High School football game on Long Island."Little did we know three months later we’d be fulfilling his wishes," said Thomas’ dad, Frank. "We love him and we miss him."
