The advent of NIL (name, image and likeness) opportunities for college athletes has created an NFL-like free agency, college football coaches say. You can see...

said recently. “And that’s one of the benefits of SMU and other schools. The city of Dallas, the community and all the people that are able to support athletes in their name, image and likeness is an advantage to our location.”What’s unclear is how much NIL money is out there, or whether some of the numbers thrown around are real.Unlike the NFL, there isn’t a salary cap or a database to track how much money players are making.

“We brought in really reputable people in the space to tell [our players], ‘Believe literally half of what you read, and less of what you hear, because for the most part it’s not true,’” said South Florida head coach Alex Golesh, who was an assistant at Tennessee last year. So how do players in the transfer portal and those considering entering it know what to believe? Schools can’t use NIL to entice players, but their history of deals can speak for itself.“Having the right strategy and structure is critical because players talk, right?” said TheLinkU’s Elrod. “College athletes know college athletes, and you don’t want to get the reputation, especially when you’re not able to fulfill your obligation.

“We’ve relatively kept our entire roster and we lost one player in the last three years,” UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor said. “And we can celebrate seven of our players that could’ve left and decided to come back, and it’s all because — let’s be honest — NIL.” There’s a not-so-secret gray area between retention and acquisition, however: tampering. College coaches say it runs rampant. UAB head coach Trent Dilfer said during American Athletic Conference media days that he planned to meet with the NCAA regarding tampering by other teams. He said he had IP addresses and social media proof to corroborate his accusations, such as teams using high school coaches or other third-party entities to coerce players into the portal.
