Does anyone else ever feel conflicted about taking a planned break from running?
This sounds like a lot of working out for a vacation from working out, but I pick only one or two of those things. I’d love to skip them entirely, but if I do I get injured when I try to do normal runs the third and fourth week back when my body has turned into its apparently native state of stiff-jointed LEGO-person.
After two weeks off and two weeks building up mileage, I’ll have totaled a month without a hard workout. It’s pretty restorative, and I feel like I’m starting over when I launch into the next season.Of course, despite how bad I may feel that first day back on the track, I can be decently in shape after a few workouts because in the grand scheme of things I didn’t take much time off relative to a year of work.
There were some years where I was tired enough that I didn’t even run “a little bit” for the planned weeks, and doing so was revitalizing. I was itching to run when it was time to come back to the season. Honestly, I need something like a vacation or huge project to distract my running neurosis; otherwise I can’t actually stop running completely. I also eventually have to battle through some small soft-tissue injury if I take that many days off, but some years that has been a worthwhile headache for the systemic and mental freshness I felt afterward. As amazing as running is for your body mind and soul, it’s easy to take for granted how much we ask of that body over time.
