Bowden has quietly built a reputation as one of Europe’s most respected investors. A pioneer in a male-dominated industry, she rockets to No. 4 on the Midas List Europe as a result of a series of cautious bets that went against the grain of the venture's hype cycle.

“She’s a woman in a space massively dominated by men who think they’re the eighth world wonder,” says Mirakl CEO Adrien Nussenbaum, who has worked with Bowden since his startup’s Series B round in 2015. “Laurel, she’s very modest, but… she just comes across as extremely smart. She doesn’t put on an act and I think she just does what she likes.”

Bowden, who had been a London-based investor at an Israel-focused firm, moved into a similar situation in 2008 when she joined Greylock Israel. The Silicon Valley heavyweight firm had dispatched three partners—Moshe Mor, Erez Ofer and Yoram Snir—to set up an Israeli outpost some months earlier. Upon meeting Bowden, they quickly came around to the idea of expanding their purview to Europe. In 2015, the firm disaffiliated from Greylock and rebranded to 83North .

At most, 83North’s core four partners will hire one or two junior-level employees at a time. By deliberately shirking a massive bulwark of support staff, however, the partners put the onus on themselves to also do the busywork and research. “You have to live with the consequences of great investments and bad investments,” Bowden says.

Bowden also spent the last few years pushing founders to be cautious about valuations. One key reason for her Midas Europe resurgence: portfolio companies like Celonis, French robotics firm Exotec and American car loan startup Lendbuzz have raised funding at increased valuations in a year when once-hot startups like Klarna have had to drastically slash theirs. “Of course, we have also overpaid,” she admits, though none of her portfolio has taken a down round to date.
