Lake Erie Distillery in Willoughby started as a side hobby for owners Fred and Cathy Wisen. Now, it's a popular distillery with a tasting room, lounge and bottle shop that sells its products across Northeast Ohio.
WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — Distilling typically isn’t an easy hobby for the average Joe. Aside from the process being a complicated skill to learn, there’s a huge overhead cost.
Despite starting in 2016, Lake Erie Distillery didn’t sell its first bottle of bourbon until 2021, as it took more than four years to age. “This started out, it was going to be a hobby. It is well past a hobby now,” Fred said of his journey.It took some trial and error for Fred to figure out Lake Erie Distillery’s product line. He wanted to be as traditional as possible with the bourbon, so he could get that authentic Kentucky flavor closer to home. As for the rest of the product line, Fred and Cathy really focused on products that no one else had.
“The people I know in Southern Ohio tell me its elevated moonshine,” Fred joked. The name comes from the way the five grains present themselves one after the other and disappear like a ghost.
