CLEVELAND, Ohio — As I go back and watch film of Juan Thornhill from his days in Kansas City, I see a high-level safety with elite athletic skills. His short area quickness, start and stop speed, hip fluidity, ball skills, field coverage, physicality, and position flexibility made him a perfect addition to Jim Schwartz’s aggressive scheme.
Thornhill played in just 11 games and his numbers were down from his time in Kansas City, just 54 total tackles and one pass deflection. In the bottom video, Thornhill is unable to drive forward on the injured calf and arrives late to the play. Without this tackle, Etienne could have gone for a huge gain. In the Schwartz scheme, playing safety means lining up deep by yourself or down along the line of scrimmage. In either position, Thornhill has the ability and speed to play sideline to sideline against the run game and cover everything deep in the pass game. The injury prevented him from covering ground and being the last line of defense for the defense.
An injury to Thornhill’s calf prevented him from being the player he was with the Kansas City Chiefs. His inability to move prevented him from doing the things that made him successful and the primary reasons Andrew Berry and his staff signed him in free agency.
