How is His Dark Materials on pre-watershed? It's terrifying! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Returning for a third and final series, the BBC adaptation has turned Philip Pullman’s novels into a glorious spectacleIt’s been almost two years since the last series ofand the third instalment arrived as one of the BBC’s perhaps less conventional festive family offerings.
A lot has happened since little Lyra Belaqua ran away from Oxford. She’s uncovered soul-severing experiments in the Arctic north, accidentally doomed her best friend to a fatal end, buddied up with a giant armoured bear, discovered who her real parents are, travelled between multiple worlds, encountered the all-powerful Subtle Knife, evaded ghoulish spectres, gone on the run with witches and escaped from near certain death dozens of times.
As with most opening episodes, the story bounced around, setting up various threads that will converge as a great battle looms and focus shifts to the immortal realm. Lyra, who according to prophecy is in fact the new “Eve”, mother of all sin, was drugged and imprisoned on a remote island by her mother, Mrs Coulter in her latest toxic attempt at maternal care. Her only hope looked to be her fellow teen rebel, Will who was busy slicing his way through worlds trying to find her.
But the bigger story for episode one was the appearance of fan favourites Baruch and Balthamos , the two rebel Angel lovers hot on the trail of Will and his knife. Appearing in human form, they were beautifully depicted and distinctly otherworldly. Soon they realised that the quickest way to get Will onside was to help him track down Lyra first.
Back in Lyra’s home world, the Magisterium were stepping up itsr hunt for heretics with a new sadistic foot soldier, Father Gomez . Lord Asriel went fullresistance, attempting to build a rebel army to fight the ultimate holy war by recruiting Commander Ogunwe , who he sprang free from prison in yet another new world.
