Why one Vogue writer is finally wearing bras again after six years
The world is round, but I am flat. As such, bras have been my struggle for years and years. In middle school and high school, I couldn’t wait to wear one, and prematurely stuffed myself into wired push-ups, attempting to metamorphose myself into aone. I still don’t, but I don’t mean this in a bragging way. There’s just nothing here to see…. Like I said, I’m flat!
In some cases, maybe I did actually look better. But after years of freeing the nipple, I finally put on a bra this past month after the spring 2023 New York fashion shows. This season felt especially overwhelming—every designer, it seemed, was going more sheer and scantily clad than the last. I needed a fresh start.
Instead, I poured over photographs by Ellen Von Unwerth or Helmut Newton, whose images often show the subject in a state of undress. Although the underpinnings are intimate, the subjects are dominant, put-together, and always in control. I woke up this past week, I put on a pinstriped pair of pants, a pinstripe collared shirt, and a black La Perla lace bra that had been sent to me eons ago. Immediately, I felt a serene power.
