Eleven years after the publication of “Olive Kitteridge,” Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, Olive is back in a sequel.

By Maris Kreizman Oct. 21, 2019 8:29 am ET Prickly but charming, stubborn but open to change, stingy but generous, Olive Kitteridge, with all her nuances and contradictions, can be summed up thusly: “She didn’t like to be alone. Even more, she didn’t like being with people.”

WSJ. spoke to novelist Strout about revisiting the town of Crosby, getting Olive’s voice exactly right and finding grace in the mundane.I never intended to write a sequel, but she just showed up again. She’s Olive and she has to be contended with. A few years ago I had the weekend to myself, and I went to a cafe to sit. All of a sudden I just saw Olive driving into the marina as an older woman, and I thought, “Uh oh. Here we go.

When Olive meets her second husband Jack in the first novel, she was disgusted to learn that he’d voted for George W. Bush. We’re in an entirely new political era now. How did you nudge at that? One of the best things for me when I write is that I suspend judgment of my characters. It’s so freeing because in real life, we do judge, and we need to in many ways to be able to maneuver through the world. When I write, I let my characters do and be who they are. I thought, Big Betty has got her story and we should listen to it and that Olive herself can take that into her heart. In fact, Jack says that she’s a snob in reverse.
